How often are pedestrians killed because of motor vehicle accidents in New York City?

In 2018, 110 pedestrians were killed in New York City in motor vehicle accidents. In 2018, there were over 10,700 pedestrian accidents in New York City. In the first five months of 2021, there were 41 pedestrian deaths in New York City. This number has risen from 2019 where there were 34 pedestrian deaths in the first five months of that year. The number of pedestrians being killed in motor vehicle accidents has been tracked by New York City since 1910. The lowest number of pedestrian deaths on record from 1910 to 2021 is the year 2020, in which only 99 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle accidents. This is attributed to the shelter-in-place orders imposed on New York City because of the coronavirus pandemic.

How often are pedestrians injured in motor vehicle accidents in the United States?

Every year, approximately 60,000 pedestrians are injured in motor vehicle accidents in the United States. Each year, approximately 4,000 pedestrians are killed in motor vehicle accidents in the United States. This means that a pedestrian is injured in a motor vehicle accident every 8 minutes and a pedestrian is killed in a motor vehicle accident every 113 minutes.

What Is New York City Doing to Prevent Pedestrian Accidents?

New York City has taken significant steps to address the high number of pedestrian injuries and fatalities caused by motor vehicle accidents. Recognizing this as a major public safety issue, the city launched Vision Zero in 2014—a comprehensive, citywide initiative aimed at eliminating all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.

As part of Vision Zero, the city has implemented a variety of strategies to make streets safer for pedestrians, including:

  • Increased enforcement of moving violations, such as speeding and failure to yield to pedestrians.

  • Installation of speed cameras, especially in school zones—resulting in a 60% reduction in speeding at monitored locations.

  • Street redesigns and infrastructure improvements, including more visible crosswalks, pedestrian islands, and traffic calming measures.

Despite these proactive efforts, pedestrian accidents still happen—and when they do, the consequences can be devastating.

At Curan & Ahlers LLP, we stand ready to help victims of pedestrian accidents and the families of those tragically killed. If you or a loved one has been affected, our experienced legal team will fight to hold negligent drivers accountable and help you pursue the justice and compensation you deserve.

What types of injuries are common when pedestrians are involved in motor vehicle accidents?

Pedestrians that have been hit by a motor vehicle often suffer injuries to their head, chest, and lower extremities. When a pedestrian is hit by a motor vehicle traveling less than 15 miles per hour, it is not likely that they will suffer fatal injuries. However, when the motor vehicle is traveling more than 15 miles per hour, the chances of a fatal injury can skyrocket as a pedestrian can hit their head or sustain an injury to their spinal cord.

One of the most common injuries suffered by pedestrians are fractures to the bones in their lower extremities. An interesting statistic is that up to 50 percent of pedestrians that are involved in motor vehicle accidents sustain injuries to the lower extremities. This is because the lower extremities are likely the first area of a person's body to come into contact with the motor vehicle.

How do I recover compensation from the at-fault driver's insurance company for my injuries?

If you are injured as a pedestrian by a negligent car driver, you have three years in which to bring a lawsuit to recover monetary compensation for the injuries you sustained in the motor vehicle accident. This is referred to as a statute of limitations. If you do not bring a lawsuit to recover monetary compensation for the injuries you received as a pedestrian in a motor vehicle accident within these three years, you will not be able to recover for the injuries that you received in the motor vehicle accident. At Curan & Ahlers, we will fight on your behalf to recover monetary compensation for the injuries that you received as a pedestrian in a motor vehicle accident.

Who pays my medical bills if I am a pedestrian hit by a motor vehicle?

If you are a pedestrian that has been hit by a motor vehicle, the insurance company of the at-fault driver and owner of the motor vehicle that hit you is responsible for paying for your medical bills. The insurance company will often be required to pay up to $50,000 in medical bills for the person injured by their insured.
